1988 – 2000
This hugely popular range was issued in 1988 after Peter Fagan took a break in Bruges, Belgium. It was during this trip that he wandered into an antique shop and spotted 4 bears. He purchased three of them and later went back for the 4th, these were Robert, Gustav von Bruin, Peregrine and August String Bear. The Curio Shop recreates that antique shop setting in Bruges which sparked the inspiration for this new collection. All the bears that appeared in the collection were based on real bears owned by the Fagans, many of which were purchased at Christie’s in London where they became familiar faces. Peter’s wife Frances Fagan created the stories which accompanied the bears.
In 1997 and a new sub-collection of bears where launched called Celebrity Bears. This initiative was designed to raise money for the Society of Stars. Several celebrities handed over their beloved bears and allowed Peter to create miniatures of their own bears for collectors to buy and add to their collections. The Performance was a large limited edition focal point and the individual bears featured in this piece were not officially released into the range. Instead, they were sold at special in-store promotional events.
Other collections included String Things which were large anatomically structured bears which could be positioned as the owner required. These came in hessian bags and packaging which resembled shoe boxes.
Several collaborations were initiated over the years including Steiff, Hermann and Lawleys to name just a few.
The main Teddy Bear range featured individual bears, large set pieces and limited editions along with special colourways and the odd mould variation.
